| Challenging behaviors are a part of every parenting experience, but sensory, communication and receptive issues can present a unique set of circumstances for the parents of an autistic child. We offer empirically measured behavior programs designed to increase desired behaviors and decrease undesired behaviors.
All of our behavior programs are based on the principles of Positive Behavior Support, which is an approach based on developing an understanding of why and where a child is likely to engage in problem behaviors. When we understand why a child engages in challenging behaviors, we can develop effective strategies for preventing or minimizing the occurrrence of challenging behaviors as well as teach appropriate, alternative behaviors and skills.

Positive Behavior Support plans include a number of interventions that can be implemented across situations and settings. These interventions include: 1) Proactive strategies for changing the environment so triggering events are removed 2) Teaching new skills that replace problem behaviors 3) Eliminating or minimizing natural reinforcement for problem behavior 4) Maximizing clear reinforcement for appropriate behavior.
The cornerstone of Positive Behavior Support is the use of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) to identify the environments and events that reliably predict and maintain the occurrence of problem behaviors.
Primary outcomes of a functional assessment process includes: 1) A clear description of the challenging behaviors 2) Events, settings and situations that predict when a behavior may or may not occur 3) Consequences that maintain challenging behaviors

Differential reinforcement: These procedures reinforce the reduction or replacement of undesirable behaviors with alternative behaviors that are incompatible with the undesired behaviors. All differential reinforcement procedures consist of these two components: 1) Providing reinforcement contingent upon either the occurrence of a behavior other than problem behavior or problem behavior occurring at a reduced rate. 2) Withholding reinforcement for problem behavior.
